Wagons East is our clubs Jeep trip on the Historical Naches Pass Trail. The trail is famous because the Longmire party was the first wagon train to used it to head west in 1853. The trail was not finished so they had a rough time getting across. They had to winch down the Naches Trail Cliffs near Greenwater. On our Wagons East Jeep trip, we start at the Naches Trail Cliffs and go west to east.

On Thursday, October 8th 2020, the Liberty State Overland Club headed up to the Lost Meadow Campground in the Little Naches area to set up camp for the weekend. TJ40 came up a few hours after we got there.

Friday we went out and got firewood. After that we hung around camp playing with the dog. MrWilsonWJ showed up in the evening and set up camp.

Early Saturday morning it started raining and did not let up much. A few more people showed up for the Naches Pass Trail run around 9:30 AM. We headed out at 10:00 AM and drove to FS1914 to air down. Once everyone was aired down, we then headed over Pyramid Pass to the west end of the Naches Pass 4×4 Trail. It was snowing on top of the pass.

We broken into two groups to head back east. The two groups met up at the first cross road on the Naches Trail and then again at FS7080 where we all ran together the rest of the trail. We stopped for lunch at Government Meadows and walked to the cabin on the Pacific Crest Trail. Of coarse the rain did not let up.

After lunch, we headed on east. At the Naches Pass sign the rain turned into snow. Down the trail we came across a deep hole in the trail. The taller rigs walked through it but Charlies tires were not tall enough for the ruts. He backed out as far as he could. James gave Charlie a pull out of the hole and we moved on passing another group of Jeeps.

The last part of the trail was really slick. The last down hill section all the rigs slid down it. Sliding down, Charlie came close to ahead on with a tree. He came to a stop inches away.

At the pavement we headed back to camp at Lost Meadow for a potluck dinner. Some went home.

Sunday morning after breakfast, we headed up to Raven Roost. We hit snow as we went up. The view up at Raven Roost was not so good due the clouds. We still had fun going. It was cold so we headed back down and headed home.

This was a great time.

On Sunday, October 4th 2020, Eastern Washington Tourism members took a drive to the Wenas Wildlife Area by the way of Kelley Hollow Road to test out Steve’s Blazer’s repair. Last time it when out, it had no power to climb hills. This also gave us a chance to see where the Evans Canyon Fire went.

We aired down at the entrance and headed up Kelley Hollow Road. At the top we took a break to take in the views. Mount Rainier, Kittitas Valley, Wenas Valley, and much more.

We turn northwest on Umtanum Ridge Road. The fire took out all the thick brush that had been there for years. A very sad sight.

We then drop into Black Canyon and back up. The forest was burnt. Looks like the trees are all dead. Very sad. This was a very nice drive in the forest before.

We ran the Umtanum Ridge northwest an took the trail down to the pavement and aired up for home.

On the way home, we had to stop for Turkeys crossing the road.

On Sunday, September 20th 2020, the Eastern Washington Expeditions staff took a drive to the Wenas Wildlife Area by the way of Sheep Company Road to see if the area was open for an upcoming event since the Evans Canyon Fire went through there. We aired down at the entrance and headed up Durr Road. All the roads a long the way were posted closed except Rosa. There post there but on signs. We found a closed sign on Durr Road where the Evans Canyon Fire jumped the road. We headed back down and aired up.

The Crew fueled up and headed from Selah towards Juniper Dunes around 2:00 PM of Friday September 11th, 2020. As was got closer to the Tri-Cities, the smoke from the wildfires got thicker. We pulled into Smith Canyon at Juniper Dunes around 4:00 PM. We set up camp and waited for guest to show up. Steve and James H came in their ZJ not long after we got there. Later that night my oldest son with family and other UTV riders showed up to camp with us.

Saturday Morning we had other club members come and some from Overland Bound show up too for the main ORV run. Around 10:15 AM we headed out into the dunes with five Jeeps and a Ram. I rode in Doc’s YJ. It was his first time driving in the sand. Charlie followed in his ZJ and it also was his first time driving in the sand. James lead the way in his YJ taking us on some fun trails.

One ridge we came up to was too steep for a few rigs that tried to climb it. Doc’s 4 cylinder just didn’t have the power. Doc worked his way down the ridge trying climbs until he found one he could top. Charlie was still working on climbing a bigger one. Charlie almost topped it but had to stop because a coolant hose fitting broke. Charlie let the engine cool down and then backed down to a safe stop to make the repair. As we were making the repair, the two rigs from Overland Bound left.

We worked our way around the ridge and met the UTV guys at the Wilderness entrance. We took a short break and then head on north.

We ran all the way to the north fence and headed back down the west side. James found some real challenging trails for us to follow him through. My sons learned a lot from following him.

James got us out to one of the biggest bowls. The boys really liked driving around it after being scared the first time around.

James left us at the bowl since he had to get home. We worked our way to the big sand open area and then ran the southeast fence back toward camp. It was fun running the trails through the tall Sagebrush.

Back at camp the UTV riders were packing up to leave. The boys drove around the hills of Smith Canyon a little until Steve had to leave. The EWE Crew spent the night and head for home around 3:00 PM on Sunday.

This was a very fun trip thanks to all who came.
