Yakima Valley Trolley Tour
Report & photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets – A division of Eastern Washington Adventures.
On the afternoon of Sunday April 27th 2014, Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 met up at the Yakima Electric Railway Museum in Yakima, Washington for a special tour. Acting Yakima Valley Trolley Executive Director Karl Pasten set everything up and gave guided tours in the buildings.
The Yakima Valley Trolley Tour started in the Powerhouse building where there were some very cool historic things to look at. Karl Pasten told us about the history and how everything works.
Next the Cub Scouts, parents and siblings loaded onto Number 1776 Streetcar and took at ride down Pine Street. On the way the trolley stopped at a few places and the Motorman Paul Edmondson told us about the history of the Yakima Valley Trolleys plus the history of things in the City of Yakima we saw. One of the benches for an old trolley stop is still there along Pine Street.
The trolley tracks on Pine Street ended at Holton Avenue just off Tieton Drive. They had to move the power to the other end of the trolley to head the other direction. Colin Thomas, one of the Webelos Scouts got to help. This only took a few minutes and then we were on our way back to the Yakima Electric Railway Museum.
Once we got back, Karl Pasten gave us the tour of the carbarn as Motorman Paul Edmondson was bringing the streetcar in for the day. The Cub Scouts got one last ride into the carbarn.
This was a great experience for the Cub Scouts and their families. Thank you to Karl Pasten, Paul Edmondson and the other Yakima Valley Trolley Association volunteers that help keep this history alive.
You can find Yakima Valley Trolleys located in Yakima, Washington at South Third Avenue at West Pine Street. On the web at YakimaValleyTrolleys.org.
