A visit to Joel’s Tires

Report and Photos by Clay Graham / CegPics.com

On Tuesday March 5th, 2013 I stopped in at our website sponsor, Joel’s Tire in Yakima Washington to talk about their Anniversary Celebration. I had a flat on a snow wheeling run a few days before and I could feel that tire was low on the way over to Joel’s Tire. I pulled up to Joel’s Tire and they came out and checked the tire PSI. In was at 10 PSI so they aired it up. We could hear air leaking fast. So they said they could fix it for me.

I walked in to talk to Ryan the Manager of Joel’s Tire about their event. Ryan was with another costumer so I took a few pictures of the Joel’s Tire shop as I was waiting.

I got to talk with Ryan and shortly after they pulled my JK into the shop to fix the leaking tire. They pulled off the tire to find that I had bent and cracked the rim. Not good! That must have happened during the snow wheeling run when we heard something hit the bottom of the Jeep. The rigs behind me said I kicked up a big rock.

I went back in to see if Ryan could order a stock JK rim. He said he had an used rim just like the ones on my JK. Ryan gave me a great deal on the rim and they mounted my tire on it. A few minutes later I was off enjoying the rest of my day.

Thank you Joel’s Tire!

On Saturday March 2nd, 2013 Eastern Washington Adventures Club members met up at Curly’s II in Kittitas Washington for the annual Top Member Challenge. We lined up and headed to Colockum Road for the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge up Colockum Pass.

Once on Colockum Road we aired down and headed up to find a good starting point. We hit snow not to far into the trees. Once on top of the ridge the snow got challenging. We found a wide area near the power lines to start the snow wheeling challenge to the Halfway Station Marker.

We lined up the challenge member rigs. TJ40 – TJ, Foxracer – TJ, Jepscum – TJ and in the second row was Guido -TJ. The judge rigs were Ceg & Ron the Parts Guy – JK and AlwayswrenchN & Jeep Wife – YJ. Rangerat – YJ watched from the back of the pack.

This was a close race. Everyone was in the lead one time or another. Even the JK Judge rig. LOL

There was a lot of stucks along the way. Only rigs competing could help each other out and being good sports they did. The JK judge rig had to get help from the judges in the YJ a few times.

Since the snow was so challenging and it was getting late, we moved the finish line up to a Green Dot cross road we knew. The problem was the Green Dot markers were missing and some at the finish line did not remember the land marks. Foxracer stumbled across the finish line looking for the Green Dot markers so he is the 2013 Top Member. He would have had it sooner if the Green Dot markers were there. The only other competing rig close to the finish line was Guido. We were there in the JK to call the winner.

We all turned around to head back out. Leaving was a challenge for my low riding JK since the ruts were deep in areas and the snow got slushy from the warm day. I got pulled out by many rigs on the way out. I dropped the tire pressure down to 5 PSI but that did not help much. The last bad part I just broke trail around the ruts and it worked well. As we came out of the snow we could hear one of my tires was all the way flat. We had to add air before the airing up area and then added more to all the tires down the road. (Found out later that I broke the rim on a rock)

Around 6:30 PM we met back up at Curly’s II in Kittitas for the award dinner. J T Parts & Accessories / JustDifferentials.com donated a Nitro Gear & Axle FlexFit hat to the winner and had decals for everyone. Foxracer will get a trophy with his name on it from Eastern Washington Adventures.

This was a very fun day thanks to who all came. Thank you J T Parts & Accessories / JustDifferentials.com for donating the Nitro Gear & Axle FlexFit hat to the winner and for all the decals.

EWA Snow Wheeling at the Ahtanum State Forest

Snow Wheeling at the Ahtanum State Forest
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Sunday February 24th, 2013 Eastern Washington Adventures Club members met up at Highland Quick Stop in Cowiche Washington for the Ahtanum 4×4 Snow Wheeling Run. We had five rigs on this run, TJ40 – TJ, Craigen – TJ, Rangerat – YJ, The Middle Kid – Dakota and Ceg – JK. Guido rode with TJ40 and MudSlinger93 rode with me. We convoyed to Cowiche Mill Road and aired down.

Once aired down, we headed up Cowiche Mill Road and then up C-1300 onto Hatton road. Not much snow on the way up. Up on Hatton the snow drifts were deep and soft. Craigen and I both got stuck right off the bat. TJ40 also got stuck trying to go around to pull me out of my second stuck. The Middle Kid parked his rig after getting stuck a few times in the same area too. He rode shotgun with Rangerat most of the rest of the day.

We moved on up the ridge trying to stay on top of the harder snow. Of coarse we fell through a lot since the crust wasn’t very thick. We turned around once the snow got to soft to move forward. The last part I got stuck many times. On the way back through that last area, I used momentum to fly over the soft spots. That worked well. The next area I tried to blow through a snow drift where no one had drove and got stuck good. TJ40 got stuck next to me. Craigen got stuck trying to pull me through. Rangerat was trying to pull us back and that did not work well since we were stuck good. With some winching and pulling we made it through that area.

The last drift where we had went around on the way up earlier, was the area we got all the Jeeps stuck at once. A little more winching and we were back on our way.

Just down from there we picked up The Middle Kid’s truck and head on out. We aired back up once at the pavement of Cowiche Mill Road.

Most of the group went to the Pastime in Selah for dinner. They were closing by the time everyone met back up so we finish off a pitcher of Widmer Hefeweizen and moved over to the T&T for dinner.

EWA Winter Meet & Greet at the Ponderose Community Club House

Eastern Washington Adventures
Winter Meet & Greet
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Saturday February 23rd, 2013 my family headed to Leavenworth, Washington for the Eastern Washington Adventures Winter Meet & Greet at the Ponderosa Community Club House.

We made a few stops along the way. I stopped at the view point over looking Ellensburg on I-82 to make sure the cargo rack was ok. The next stop was for coffee in Ellensburg and the last stop was at Safeway in Leavenworth for a few things for the potluck.

We got to the Ponderosa Community Club House just after 11 AM. Kenny24 and his family pulled in right behind us. Jeff and his family were already there set up for the potluck.

It was a nice day and the kids played a lot outside. There wasn’t too much snow but enough to go sledding. The kids also enjoyed playing on the playground equipment.

The event ended in the early evening. We said out goodbyes and parted ways. My family stopped down town Leavenworth to visit our favorite places. We filled a growler at Icicle Brewery and had dinner at the Munchen Haus.

The Eastern Washington Adventures Winter Meet & Greet was a lot of fun thanks to all who came. A special thank you to Jeff and Marisha for hosting this event!
