Photos: Wildfire Awareness Day at the Ahtanum State Forest

Wildfire Awareness Day
at the Ahtanum State Forest
Hosted by Boy Scouts of American (Grand Columbia Council, Skookum District),
Selah Sweets, and the Department of Natural Resources.

Report and photos by Clay Graham / CegPics.com.

At noon on Saturday April 8th, 2017, we met up at Whites Ridge Trailhead in the Ahtanum State Forest for Wildfire Awareness with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The DNR staff talked about wildfires, the hard work to put them out, the equipment they use and how to help prevent wildfires. The volunteers were able to see and feel what the fire crew uses to put the wildfires out.

This was a very fun and educational event. Thank you to all the volunteers, DNR staff and Smokey Bear.

Smokey says, ‘Only You Can Prevent Wildfires’. Click for Smokey’s website!

Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for weather conditions, work gloves, boots, lunch, water. Some hand tools will be available.

Directions
Meet at the Whites Ridge Trailhead. Exit I-82 to Valley Mall Boulevard. Turn left on Longfiber Road. Right onto Ahtanum for 13 miles. Turn right onto North Fork Road at the Tampico Store. Proceed 10 miles to the Middle Fork Road. Whites Ridge Trailhead is on the left past the guard station.

________________

ALL MINORS MUST HAVE A DNR FORM SIGN BY PARENTS OR GUARDIAN.
Participants who show up without a parent or guardian will need to have the “Minor Volunteer Registration Agreement” form filled out completely and turned in at the event. The DNR will track volunteer hours on the group time sheet, so everyone will have to fill out their name and address on the group sheet when they show up to track the hours. Download form: https://cegpics.com/Public_Land/DNR/20170408_DNR_Minor_Registration_Agreement.pdf

We need a person count for any DNR so they will set up for that many and if they have any give-a-ways. Please RSVP Clay Graham at [email protected]

NOTE: You must park in the Whites Ridge Trailhead parking area if you do not have a Discover Pass and want to attend this event.
