“Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Friday July 17th, 2009 two of my boys and I headed up toward little Naches to set up the club camp for the weekend.

Going West on SR410 I had a rear tire come apart.
Here is the Ceg pit crew changing the tire.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 1

The other tire did not look to good either but I was out of spares.
We took it easy going toward camp hoping someone might have a spare I could use.

The pit crew wanted to stop and see Horsetail Falls so we did.

As we walk back to the truck we saw a group of FJ Cruisers pass.

At our camp off FS1906 we found Guido was already there. He had been there for awhile.
The others camping showed up not long after I pulled in.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 5

On Saturday July 18th, 2009 around 10 AM we left camp.
We took FS1906 out to NF19 and took a left.
About a mile down was the Naches Pass Trail Head to the right.
The BFG sign was still missing from someone damaging it.

We were not to far onto the trail when Waycrazy’s Classic Junk broke down.
It wouldn’t be a normal Naches Pass Run if it didn’t. LOL
Being at the front of the group I am still not for sure what happen to the CJ.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 6

It wasn’t long and we were back on the trail.
After crossing FS1913 we came to the first bridge on the Naches Pass Trail.
I told everyone over the CB to make sure they didn’t drive off of it.
Havo-Jr must have missed that message because we heard a lot of commotion over the CB.
We stopped and my co-pilot Jeepscum walked back to check it out.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 7

I backed up down the trail to see for myself.
Well sure enough Havo-Jr cut it too short.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 8

Havo-Jr is new at wheelin’. I am sure he learned something.

They got Havo-Jr back on the trail and we were off.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 9

Here we are crossing the long bridge right before FS1914.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 10

We ran the trail up until we saw that section of trail was closed for maintenance.
They did not have a detour sign so we took a guess how to go around the work zone.
We took a right at the old clear cut, then two more right turn to come out on FS1914 close to NF19.

Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 12

So we now know where 1914-789 goes.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 13

We turned left onto FS1914 and ran Pyramid Pass over onto FS7080.
We turned off FS7080 to the right onto Naches Pass Trail.
We ran the Naches Pass Trail down to NF70 and then some took a walk down to see the cliff where the wagons were let down.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 14

Here are my boys coming back up from the cliff.
Photos: EWOR “Wild Winger!” Naches Pass Run 15

As we were about ready to go I heard some of our member yelling fire as they took off running with fire extinguishers.
We could see fire falling under the rig.
The guy got out and opened the hood as our members are yelling not to.
As soon as the hood was opened a ball of fire came out.

The fire was out.

Scuba help the guy get his rig down to the paved part of NF70 where the guys friends were camped.

We head back to camp by the way of Pyramid Pass.
Some of us got back onto the trail at FS1914 and ran it east toward camp.

On the trail we ran into an few guys from the west side.
We invited them to camp with us off FS1906.

The next morning I borrowed Crawl-Dads trailer spare tire to use on the other side of my tow rig. I made it home without loosing any more tires.

We had a great time thanks to all who came.

Green Lake Fire

Report & photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On July 11th, 2009 we were up on Jackass Rd setting up an aid station for the 50 K runners when the Green Lake Fire started.

The firemen that were at the aid station said they thought maybe
the fire was started by lighting Thursday night and had been just smoldering.

After we got the aid station set up we headed off to do some trail work on 4W613.
On the way we stopped on Foundation Ridge near the 4W613 trail head to look off at the fire.

I had to run back to get my wife at the aid station.
The fire got bigger and the DNR asked that we took our work party out the other
end of 4W613 since the fire looked as it was going to jump Jackass road (FS1020).

Here is a picture near were the others were taken.

After our trail work, I headed back up on Jackass Road to get my wife’s car.

On the way down I ran into the ORV Deputies. They were up there making sure everyone was out.

We went back to the Sno-park to get our tow rig and headed home.

4W613 Work Party, 50 K Run Aid Station, & Green Lake Fire
By Clay Graham / CegPics.com

This story starts in the Fall of 2008 when we finally moved on with an idea we had been thinking about for a long time. Members of the All Wheelers Off Road Club and Eastern Washington Off Road made it happen.

Phantom-309 asked Hellieson Lumber for a lumber donation for some trail signs and they were happy to donate some 2x6s.

Phantom-309 used a router and added the works to the 2x6s.
This is what they looked like when we got them.
Ahtanum

In February 2009 I went to Stein’s ACE Hardware in West Valley for some paint.
Stein’s set us up with a discount on some paint for the signs.

IORE donated three 4×6 post.

The younger members painted 3 sides of the 2x6s.

On July 8th, 2009 the younger members painted the back sides of the 2x6s.

July 9th, 2009 BlindPilot came over to paint the letters.
Ahtanum

99 helped paint some of the letters since it was getting late.
BlindPilot worked late into the night to get the signs finished.
Ahtanum

On July 10th, 2009 we headed up to the Ahtanum Sno-park to set up camp for the work party and to help with the 50 K Gray Rock Trail Run.

Around 7 PM I took two West Valley Firemen (Bob Goss and his partner) up to see where the DNR temporary moved the Gray Rock Trail for the 50 K Run.

We went back to the Sno-park to our tow rig and headed home.

This was a good day for us but not so good for the forest that was on fire.
On this day we logged 57.5 volunteer hours with the DNR for the 4W613 signs project.

I want to thank everyone that was part of the 4W613 signs project.
A special thanks to Hellieson Lumber for donating the 2x6s, IORE for the 4×6 post and to Stein’s Ace Hardware for the discount on the paint.

Do The Dew ORV Run
Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Off Road

We held this year’s “Do the Dew!” Run on July 4th, 2009. I was not able to ride my quad because of my bad back hurt too much.

Here are the pictures I did get a long with a few on the run we went on.

And the 10 riders are off to “Do the Dew!”

We decided to head down to the store to get some thing to help our sick 3 year old son.
On the way back we went up the Ahtanum South Fork Road.

We found Hercules’ (one of our members) horses were out running down the road.
We stopped and helped his sister get the horses back home.
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 53

Once we got up on Sedge Ridge we added Green Dots to the 6 new markers we had place on the last trail work party.
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 54

We took the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail back down to see if any other repairs were needed.
We headed back to Tree Phones to eat lunch and to get Luna for the next run.

This next run was from Tree Phones to Jackass Road @ the Gray Rock Trail and then back.

We had to time it to see how long it takes to get there since we are doing an aid station for the 50 K runners on July 11th, 2009.

We headed up the Mid Fork Road up onto Darland Mountain.
The views were not bad for how hazy it was.

Mt. Adams

Mt. St. Helens
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 56

We dropped off of Darland Mountain and ran into a big snow drift on the North Fork Road.
It was fun crossing the big drift.

Next we headed up the Blue Lake Trail.

Up passed Blue Lake I waited for Luna to climb the hill with her quad.

Here is a picture of Mt. Adams from there.
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 57

We got up on FS1020 and ran it onto Jackass Road to the Gray Rock Trail crossing.
It took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get there from Tree Phones by the way of Darland Mountain.

We back tracked pass Blue Lake. We did not want to stop there because of the swarms of mosquitoes.

We stopped for a break down the trail before the North Fork Ahtanum Road.
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 58

We ran the North Fork Ahtanum Road down to the Whites Ridge Cross-over trail and back to Tree Phones on the Mid Fork Road.

After dinner we headed back down the Mid Fork Road, up A-2400, A2420, A1490 and then down A1200 (Boulder Trail) to the view point over Tampico.

This is where we watched the firework shows in the valleys below.
Photos: EWOR Do The Dew ORV Run 59

The big fire work shows look small from there but it was a lot of fun for the family.
After the show we went back to Tree Phones to sleep.

The next morning (Sunday) we just could not take the mosquitoes anymore.
The mosquitoes were worse than I have even seen them.

The mosquito repellent products did not stop them from eating us up.
We threw everything in the XJ and camper and headed down to the Ahtanum Sno-park to cook breakfast.

It was hotter there but we did not get one mosquito bite there.

This was a great weekend thanks to the people who came.

Tree Phones Campground Work Party
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Tree Phones Campground at the Ahtanum State Forest is temporarily closed because of the danger trees, dead lodge pole. The DNR had fallers come in to cut down the dead trees.

On Saturday June 13th, 2009 the Eastern Washington Off Road members and other volunteers went up for the second weekend in a row to work in the Tree Phones Campground to get it reopened. The DNR brought up a chipper to get rid of some of the debris. Volunteers used chain saws to limb the trees and to cut them up to move them out of the camping area. Other volunteers worked to remove the debris.

Thank you to all that came and volunteered to help with the campgrounds maintenance.
We logged another 119 volunteer hours with the DNR for a total of 401 volunteer hours at Tree Phones Campground.

Here are some of the volunteer of the day.
