On Sunday August 31st, 2008 most of the group had to go home and the Tweety Jeep broke down on Saturday’s run so it looked like I had no one to wheel with. Then PUO and The Punisher pulled into our camp at Tree Phones with PUO’s old Chevy Step side that was turned into some type of Monster Buggy thing. We left Tree Phones and ran down the Mid Fork. We turned off and headed up A2400 to Red Saddle and onto the Sedge Ridge 4×4 Trail.

Back at camp Phantom 309 showed up to pick on the Monster Buggy.

We took a run up Whites Ridge. On the way a little diesel pickup joined us. We ran the Whites Ridge Loop and then up the Whites Ridge 4×4 Trail. We found a log across the trail and cut it out after the guys had fun driving over it.

On up the near the end we took a brake and then headed back down to Tree Phones for dinner.

This was a fun crazy time thanks to all that came.

Labor Day Saturday Run at Ahtanum State Forest
Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road.
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Off Road

On Saturday August 30th, 2008 most of the group met up at the All Wheelers camp at Tree Phones. Blind Pilot was waiting for us at the Nasty Creek Corrals. We aired down and were on our way to Louie Way Gap. It took about 35 minute to get to Louie Way Gap by forest roads.

We headed up 4W613. 99 in the Tweety Jeep had some problems with the first two climbs. The Tweety Jeep had broken a rear axle from pulling the Forest Service trailer on the 4W608 work day the Saturday before. We did not have the time to change the axle before the run so we knew Tweety would have a little harder time than the rest having an open front and only one working axle in the back. 99 got crossed up against a tree on the second climb up the rocks. The tree is ok but the Tweety Jeep took on a little carnage. We had to use the Tweety Jeeps winch to get passed the rock section. A few other rigs had a little trouble in the rock section too. Once everyone was up the rock, we headed on up to the Louie Way View Point for a break and to take in the views.

Our next stop was at the Northeast Strobach Mountain Vista for another view of Rimrock. After a few minutes, we were heading on. The next stop was at Strobach Mountain Trail Vista for lunch. As we pulled in, we head the Peak Putters on the CB and talk to them some. They were down on one of the hard core Rimrock trails.

After lunch, we moved on up the 4W613. There is a real fun section before you reach the Upper Meadow.  99 did a great job making it though there.

Down at the Lower Meadow we were stopped by a lady that told us we needed to wait for a big group of ATVs coming off of Foundation Ridge. I told her it was not a problem but she needed to have her friend stop riding in the meadow and she needed to move her ORV back on the trail. I told here what they were doing was illegal and they could get a ticket for being off the trail. She said she didn’t know they could not ride out there. She had her friend park his quad. I told her that our club put the logs up at each end of the meadow to show where the trail was so people would know where the trail was and not drive in the meadow. She said she only went around the logs to go out and sit in the sun because she was cold. Again I told her it was illegal to be out there. The lady walked back out to her ORV and sit in it without moving it. The ladies friends finely came down the trail and all drove out there in the meadow with her.

We moved on up the foundation Ridge climb. 99 had some more problems getting the Tweety Jeep up a loose area. I ran her winch out and got her winched up and around the corner. With me coaching 99, she was able to start climbing again. She was doing real good until the other rear axle broke. It was time now for the strap. Using 3 traps I pulled her Jeep on up the loose section with my XJ. Once past that loose part we took two of the straps off and use only one. The trail starts getting tight at the top of the climb. On one hill climb 99 said I pulled her into a tree and she clipped the driver’s side fender. The marker was already broke so the fender only got damaged again. We finely made it to Jackass Road where 99 could use front wheel drive to get off the mountain.

The run was a blast thanks to the people who came wheelin’ with us. Thanks for helping 99 through the trail.

The disappointing part of the Labor Day Weekend run was seeing some people have no respect for the ORV areas they use. Friday a guy with his gal on the back of his Motorcycle were riding off the road in the Tree Phones campground. One place was by the creek. He rode up from behind the REHAB AREA – TREAD LIGHTLY sign. He read the sign and then parked next to it in the Rehab Area. I have pictures.

On Saturday’s run we came across two groups off the 4W613 trail. I am not sure where the first group went off the trail but some how they pasted us twice going the same direction. The second group caused damage in the lower meadow that could get the trail closed. We are not just going to set back and do nothing because we don’t want to have the trail closed. The appropriate authorities will get a report with pictures.

We have an emergency work party scheduled to work at that meadow so others don’t follow in the damage since it looks inviting to mudders.

Tread Lightly or have your picture turned in!

The above inspired us to start the Forest Watch Volunteer Program!

Rimrock Trail 4W608 Work Day

Rimrock’s 4W608 has many deep mud holes. Because of all the mud holes there are many by-passes. Some of the by-passes have mud holes so more and more by-passes are being made. The Forest Service needs volunteers to help fill the holes or the trail could be closed.

On August 23rd, 2008 member of the All Wheeler Off Road Club and Eastern Washington Off Road met up at the Lower 4W608 Trail Head to start work on the trail. The Forest Service had a trailer we could use to move rock. Waycrazy first had to repair the trailer before we could use it which he did a few weeks earlier. BSLM pulled the trailer to the trail with his Blazer. Waycrazy brought out a tractor to load the trailer.

Here are some photos of the day:

We set up base camp at the 4W608 Trail Head and FS571.

At first BSLM used his Blazer the pull the trailer on the trail and Waycrazy ran the tractor.

This was a great time and for a great cause. Thank you to the people that came out to help.

After a days work we did not make a very big dent on what needs to be done. I was told another club will be adopting 4W608 and taking over working on the trail. I wish them good luck and thank them for taking on this big job.

Note:
Please do not spin your tires in the mud on the forest trails for fun. Spinning tires for fun is one of the ways the mud holes start and hold water. After the holes are started then others spin their tires trying to get out of the mud holes and the mud holes grow into mud bogs.
Tread Lightly!

Exploring Rimrock

Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham / CegPics.com

On Sunday morning August 17th, 2008 I came home after camping for the Naches Pass Quad and bike run. It was very hot in Yakima so wanted go back to the mountains. I got the family loaded in the XJ and headed up US12 not sure where I wanted to go. We drove up the Silver Beach and I stopped for a Rimrock burger. That was the best burger I had in a long time.

We headed up to White Pass and turned around. We stopped at the Pacific Crest Trail just to see where it crossed White Pass, then we stopped at Clear Creek Falls Overlook. After a short time, we headed down and around the other side of Rimrock Lake to check out where the 4×4 trail where.

Here are some photos of our trip:

We turned off Hwy-12 on Tieton Road near Clear Lake. We drove around Rimrock Lake and turned up FS1202. We took FS1202 around and came out FS1203. Next we headed up FS1010 from FS1000 to go see some of the Rimrock trails for something to do. We turned up 530 to got to the end of 4W637 (Short & Dirty). The marker is missing.Rimrock

Next we got back on FS1010 and ran up FS538 to the trails 4W677 (Spencer Creek) and 4W661 (Humphrey Butte).Rimrock

We went back down and got on FS1012. We thought we would see what was up 687.
By the map it looked to go up to FS543. 687 started off as an easy road.
We crossed one old road we thought we just a logging trail because it had tree growing on it. That was FS543 but we did not know it at the time.

We keep climbing the trail. It got steep and had loose rock.
The trail turned and ran the side of the ridge for a ways. It was a little off camber.
Next the trail turned back up and had another steep loose climb.
As the trail flattened out another trail came up on the right. There was not a marker.
We keep going until we saw this marker.Rimrock

I wasn’t thinking I would run into 4W641 (Leaning Tree). I am not sure how we got onto 4W651 (Buckhorn Gap).  Here are a few pictures of the intersection.Rimrock

We ran the trail back down to see where we went wrong. We only saw the one trail toward the top and guessed it was 4W651A. Rimrock

We crossed the over grown FS road 543 and then were back were we started.Rimrock

On up FS1012 around the corner we came to the 4W651 Trail Head. It is very strange we did not see where to turn to come out there since we were on 4W651 on the top.Rimrock

Next we took FS540.
