Around 10 AM on Saturday October 21st, 2006 we met up at the market in Cowiche for the Eastern Washington Off Road Exploring North Ahtanum run. A guy in a CJ5 name Shag stopped and asked if he could tag a long with us. Of course we said come along.

We started off by convoying to Hatton Road. At the gate we met one of the land owners. He said the road was open to the public but shut the gates behind you on the way through. We followed him through most of the gates with the last ride in the group shutting the gates. We made our way onto state land and ran Hatton Road up to FS1302 into the U. S. Forest Service Naches Ranger District and then up to Jumpoff Lookout.

We took a break at Jumpoff Lookout. The view off Divide Ridge was great. Rimrock Lake looked weird without all the water.

After the break, we made our way down onto Cowiche Mill Road and then turned onto C1000. It was cool seeing Teepees out in the middle of nowhere.

We worked our way up onto Cowiche Ridge and took a break. Across was Pine Mountain Lookout.

After the break, we headed on up Cowiche Ridge and then turned down Nasty Creek Road. Down near the South Fork Cowiche Creek we parted ways. Shag with through the private land to get back home since he had permission to do so. The rest of us headed on down to Nasty Creek Corrals and out the North Fork Ahtanum Road home.

This was a fun easy run and we got to meet some new cool people. It was a great day.

UPDATE: The mud trail system has been closed.

On October 14th, 2006 Eastern Washington Off Road held an ORV run at Beverly Dunes. Most that came were members of the All Wheelers Off Road Club. There were twelve all together. Ten quads and two bikes. The weather was nice most of the time we were there. The wind picked up in the evening.

The sand dunes were fun to play on but the muddy trails where a favorite of many in the group. I used my quad’s Warn winch to pull a few stuck quads out of the deep mud.

We loaded up around dark and headed hope. We had a real fun day.

Photos: Naches Pass Wagon Trail 4×4 Run & Camp Out

Naches Pass Wagon Trail 4×4 Run & Camp Out

Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham & ? / CegPics.com

Naches Pass is a historic wagon trail made for settlers going toward the Puget Sound.

UPDATE: The west end of the 4×4 trail has been blocked off from FS7065 to FS70.

On Friday September 29th, 2006, we set up camp at Bear Creek near the Naches Pass Trailhead for the Eastern Washington Off Road Naches Pass Trail Run.

On Saturday, we had seven rigs show up for the run. All the rigs in this group were owned by members of All Wheelers Off Road Club. Around 10 AM, we convoyed west on NF19 and turned on FS1913 to hit the Naches Pass Wagon Trail a from there. It was sad to see they are logging near the trail so the deep woods look is gone in a few places a long that stretch.

At the area where the trail gets narrow and steeper we ran in to a group of 20 plus Jeeps. It was hard to move over to let the first one down. The others stayed up the trail and pulled off where ever they could to let us go by. Once at the top of the climb we stopped so we could regroup.

As we were parked, there was a lot more rigs and other ORVs headed east. One of the groups was PNWJeep.com. Piece County Sheriff Department also came by. They were doing Search and Rescue training. It looked like they were having fun.

Once the traffic died down, we headed on up the trail. At the Pacific Crest Trail we stopped to eat lunch go check out the cabin. Some Eastern Washington Off Road members came up from the west side. My daughter had fun playing with the wild birds. As we were there taking a break in the warm sunshine, the fog rolled in and it got cold quick.

We were ready to leave and Waycrazy found he had a problem with his CJ. JWHoss used his Bronco to tow Waycrazy’s rig back to camp. We took Pyramid Pass over. As their tow strap broke, my XJ lost a burp box hose. We were able to cut it and make it work. We added coolant but there wasn’t enough in the radiator so she started getting hot. We pull over and had to take a radiator hose off to top off the radiator. It was fixed and then we were on our way.

Back at camp, Waycrazy’s wife came up with there tow rig and they towed the CJ home. JWHoss and family headed home too.

On Sunday morning Scuba went home so that left us with only 4 rigs for the run. Around 10 AM we ran Pyramid Pass over to just above NF70 and start back west on the Naches Pass Trail.

Instead of doing the off camber part we stayed up on the top of ridge this time thinking the off camber part was the bypass. Nothing is marked on the trail on the west side. This took us to a long steep drop. After we dropped down this steep hill we came out to a T, not back onto Naches Pass Trail. That is when I was sure we use to get on Naches Trail by doing that climb in the late 1980s. Everything was grown over now. The road to the right that we use to get to Naches Trail on was not passable because the brush took it over. Wow how things change over time.

We took a left to look for the trail. It wasn’t too far, but there was a big mud hole we had to cross to get back on the Naches Pass Trail. The last part of the trail is a lot of fun. We stopped above the hiking part of the trail to go see the Naches Cliff where the Longmire Party lowered their wagons.

After a quick look, we got back into the rigs and headed down NF70 to the pavement where there was a outhouse. We had lunch in the parking area. We saw a lot of the same rigs heading home that we had met on the trail the day before.

After lunch we headed back across Pyramid Pass onto NF19. We ran NF19 to FS1913. We turned east onto the Naches Pass Trail.

At the top of the first hill climb (if you were heading west / where Yeti broke his drive line earlier in the year) they filled in the hole and made it where you can’t drive there. You now have to go around the tree where the high part of the trail was. It is a lot safer now. The big mud holes at the beginning of the trail are also filled in too. That was great. We stopped for a picture at the BF Goodrich sign near the trail head before going back to camp.

We packed up camp and headed home at dark. Mischief Maker had the long drive back to the west side. We were happy to be only 50 miles from home.

Our trip home took longer than we had hoped. The RV lost an alternator belt. We had a spare belt and replaced it in the DOT’s driveway. We got home around 10 PM.

This was a great run. Thanks for all that came out. You guys made it a fun run.

On Saturday September 9th 2006 we met up in Vantage and convoyed to Moses Lake Sand Dunes for an All Wheelers Off Road Club run called by Icesis.

It was very windy when we pulled in. We played in the sand dune climbing and shooting around bowls.

We worked our way out to the Potholes Reservoir. Riding a long the short was a lot of fun. We stopped to watch a CJ drive out into the Potholes Reservoir and kill there motor. CJ’s don’t float!

This was a great day run. We found out this is the better time to go. There is a lot more fun with the Potholes Reservoir area open. It is only open from July1st to October 1st.

Labor Day Run at the Ahtanum
Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham  / CegPics.com

On Tuesday August 29th, 2006 I took up my family to Tree Phones to get a camp for the Eastern Washington Off Road Labor Day Run.

On Wednesday we loaded the kids in the XJ and the wife rode the quad. We went up to Darland Mountain and back around. We hit a few side trails on the way.

On Thursday we took a drive on Sedge Ridge.

On Friday my wife went into town to get some more fuel and supplies. I sat around camp waiting for members of the All Wheelers Off Road Club and others to show up. PullUout came up early in the day. It was nice to have someone to BS with. Everyone else showed up in the evening.

On Saturday as we were getting ready to pull out for the run, Deputy Sutliff from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office came to our camp to meet us. He said he had seen we had a run from the Eastern Washington Off Road forum. We talked awhile about the web site and about the closed areas of the Ahtanum. It was good to meet Deputy Sutliff. He said if anyone has any questions about ORV areas in Yakima County they were welcome to contact him. His e-mail is: [email protected]

On this run we had 4 quads (99, Tiny, Bobstar & his wife), 1 bike (Jacob) and 7 rigs (Ceg, Sgt. Superman, Test Dummy, Stiff_CJ, Mischief Maker, PullUout & Fatboy). We started off the by going down the Mid Fork Ahtanum to the McLain Canyon Road and up the North Fork. Jacob’s bike broke down and Tiny pulled him back to Tree Phones with his quad. We moved on up the North Fork Road. We turned up the Blue Lake Trail, then 4W615 passed Blue Lake and stopped at Blue Slide Lookout.

After we regrouped at Blue Slide Lookout we headed on down and onto 4W613. It was tight for PullUout’s full size. I had to stop to get the boulders out of the trail down from the cattle guard since they were to big to drive over. We had to stop on the trail while PullUout repair his power steering. Then we stopped to regroup at the Lower Meadow.

On up the trail we ran into MonsterMazda and his group crossing the Upper Meadow. We talked awhile then headed on down the trail. The next stop was on Strobach Mountain for a cool view of Rimrock.

After a few pictures we headed down the Strobach Mountain 4×4 Trail. Near the bottom of the trail we stopped to regroup. That was good because Odo was hungry.

After we regrouped we headed down to the Nasty Creek Corrals. Most of the rigs hit the North Fork Ahtanum pavement and went back to Tree Phones. Test Dummy and I stayed with the 3 quads and ran up Doe Pocket onto Foundation Ridge and back around. It was dark the time we got back.

On Sunday Colemancooler came up to wheel with us. Dweezy camped with us but didn’t get to go with us until this days run. On this days run we had 4 quads (99, Tiny, Dweezy & Jacob) and 6 rigs (Ceg, Colemancooler, Sgt. Superman, Test Dummy, Mischief Maker & Fatboy). We took off from camp and headed up on top of Whites Ridge. Colemancooler’s rig was over heating so he headed back. We took a break at where the Grey Rock Trail meets the Whites Ridge Crest Trail.

We turned around and ran the Whites Ridge Crest Trail back down. At the Whites Cross Over Trail we meet up with Sgt. Superman. A few of the guys ran back to Tree Phones to get some refreshments and the rest of us ran the Whites Ridge Trail to the bottom. We all meet back up at the Sno-park.

From the Sno-park we ran up A2400 and then A2420 to the top of Sedge Ridge. On the way up I lost my low range in my XJ’s transfer case. I had to run the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail in high. It was fun getting up the Sedge Ridge Rocky Climb, but I made it up on the easier trail. We ran the trail to the cross over looking Cultus Hole. Deputy Sutliff had told us that the logging company bought the rest of the trail and didn’t want anyone on there land so we watched the sun set and head back down the way we came.

This was a great run. Thank you for all coming out. You made this old man happy on his Birthday.
