Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

The next morning we headed up Sedge Ridge to do some trail Maintenance.
We ran A-2400 up and turned onto A-2420.

At the top of A-2420 we found a mark was missing so we added a new one.

We next ran the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail toward Tampico.
Not far plast the Boulder Trail we found two big trees had fallen across the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 2

I cut the first tree and Guido pulled it into the by-pass with his TJ.

This second Tree was bigger.

Again I cut the tree and Guido tried to pull the tree into the by-pass.

Here I am getting a different hold on the tree for Guido. (I do not know what my daughter did to the camera when she took this)
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 6

Here we got the two trees moved off the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 7

We ran the trail to the end to make sure nothing else needed to be done.
Here comes Guido.

On the way back we stop for a group picture near the Goat Trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 9

We ran the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail on past Red Saddle and up the rocky climb.
I wasn’t sure how the Sami would do but 99 drove it right on up.

Here I had to pull a tree top off the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 13

Where South Fork Ahtanum Road and the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail meet there were some markers missing.
People on quads were stopped there for a break so we keep going on up the trail.

Right at the top of the Double hill climb the trail was covered with snow. The snow drift was to off camber for me to stay on the trail.
I kept sliding down into stumps. I had to turn around.
The Green Dot markers at the Cultus Hole intersection will have to wait.

Regrouping.

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 15

We ran back down to the South Fork Road / Sedge Ridge Crest Trail intersection.
The quad riders had moved on. We found one marker was broken and the other two were missing.

Next we ran down the South Fork. We picked up a lot of beer cans along the way.

At the Red Saddle Road we replaced a painted Green Dot Marker with a new one.

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 23

We also reset an old broken road marker too.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 24

We found the old A-1400 marker fell off the post.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 25

We fixed it with what we had.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 26

We ran on down A-2400 toward the Sno-park.
Near the bottom if the ridge we found someone had drove on top of a Green Dot Marker we just put in two weeks before.
The Green Dot Marker is now broken.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 27

Now back towards camp.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 2 of 2 28

We packed up camp and sit around resting before heading home to the heat.
Here are two pictures during that time.

Here is the Mid fork Ahtanum Creek running behind our camp.

Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Saturday May 30th, 2009 some of the All Wheelers Off Road Club members came up to the Sno-park to do some more work on the Green Dot roads and trails.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 32

We first headed up the Mid Fork and then up the Whites Ridge Loop Trail.
At the top of the ridge as the trail turns west we found a broke Green Dot Marker.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 33

As we went along we added some new Green Dots to the markers that had the tops of them broken.

As the trail turned toward the south we found some down fall in the trail.
The members had the trail cleared in no time.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 34

We turned up the Whites Ridge Crest Trail.
At the top of the second climb we had a big tree to remove from the trail.
People had a by-pass around both side of it.

Test Dummy cut the tree.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 35

Fatboy pulled the tree out of the trail with his TJ.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 36

Volunteers moved the debris.

Fatboy pulled the tree onto the most used by-pass.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 38

Volunteers put what they could find at the top of the by-pass.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 39

At the next intersection we replaced a broken Green Dot Marker.

Havo showing us how to stick Green Dots. lol
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 42

Just up the trail we started hitting patches of snow on the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 43

Monster jumped out of the Jeep to move some branches from the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 44

Here we placed two new markers since there was a new logging road pushed in.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 45

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 46

On up the trail the loggers had a big mess.
I drove up what I think is the trail until I couldn’t stay on top of the snow.
I wanted to be sure this was the trail before we placed a Green Dot Marker. I walked from here.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 47

I found the trail again where the snow is on the left.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 48

We went back down to put the marker in at the start of the logging.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 49

Heading back down.

I was driving the Tweety Jeep.
Here are the other member rigs:

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 53

We stopped for lunch at “Norm’s Check Point”.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 54

After lunch we ran down to the Whites Ridge Cross-over trail and headed toward the North Fork Ahtanum Creek Road.

Dropping down the ridge we found one marker missing and another so far in the brush you couldn’t see it.
The volunteers removed the hidden marker and added two new Green Dot markers at this intersection.

These two are finish for now until we get a saw to cut off the top broken part on the old marker.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 60

The Green Dot marker was broken and down at the McLaine Canyon road and the North Fork Ahtanum Creek Road.
We gave it a new Green Dot Marker.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 61

At this point a few members had to leave.
We headed up the North Fork Ahtanum Creek Road to see if we could get the markers done on our adopted Blue Lake Trail.

The open switch back was a challenge to get up.
I made it up and ran on up to see how the trail was as the others worked their way through the snow.
I turned around at the Blue Lake Trail Head.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 62

Havo had made it up but 99 was still at the bottom not doing well with the open diff Sami.
I took the Tweety Jeep down and towed the Sami up.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 63

The next switch back there was a tall snow drift. The Sami had some problems getting up it.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 64

We tried to get it to the top a few different ways with the tow strap.
The last try was me backing it way up and running those mice hard. I leaped it up on top just to get stuck.
I gave 99 her rig back and Havo pulled her on through.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 65

We ran in snow from there to the Blue Lake Trail.

99 moving well now.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 66

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 67

At the Blue Lake Trail Head we left the Sami. 99 and the kids jumped in the Tweety Jeep with me.
Here is the area where we had to do some marker repair.
A new Green Dot marker here to show the way out.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 68

These two markers will have to be fixed after the snow melts. lol
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 69

We could not make it up to the top to check on the other marker so we headed back down.

Havo working it.

99 and Bubz getting back in the Sami at the Blue Lake Trail Head.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Green Dot Work Party Part 1 of 2 71

We headed back down to the Sno-park where some aired up for home and we got the camp fire going for the night.
It was a very warm night.

2009 Selah Community Days Parade
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On May 16th, 2009 a few of us went to the Selah Community Days starting off with the parade.

The parade was close to two hours long with many different things to look at.

After the parade was over we headed over to Wixson Park where there were many vendors and a Carnival.

In the park we got to visit with some friends and the kids got to play.
This was a very nice family event.

Here are some of the pictures of the Selah Community Days Parade:

Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day Run
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Friday May 8th, 2009 we went up to the Ahtanum Sno-park to set up camp for the weekend.

Greg Mackey from the DNR came by our camp and dropped off the tools and things to use on our adopted trails.

Here are my boys picking up trash in the camp site we planned on camping in.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 73

As the day went our members showed up to camp.

The next morning we had more members show up for the run.
We headed out toward the trail around 10:30 AM or so.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 74

As we turned onto Whites Ridge Loop Trail we saw a Green Dot Marker down so we stopped to fix it.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 75

We had most of the tools in Crawl Dad’s truck.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 76

Back on the trail again picking up trash along the way.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 77

As the trail turned west we found a tree top on the road.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 78

Blind-Pilot pulled the tree onto an old blocked off road.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 79

The strap got rolled under the tree.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 80

Not far after that area we hit snow patches. I got stuck on a big drift with my Sami.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 81

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 82

99 pulled me out with the Tweety Jeep.
We all turned around knowing just around the corner the snow was drifted badly on the north face.

We went back down to the Mid Fork Road.
We headed up and got on the other side of the Whites Ridge Loop Road snow drifts.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 83

Next we turned up Whites Ridge Crest Trail.
We came up to another tree that dropped it parts.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 84

The volunteers worked and cleared the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 85

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 86

Next we came up on a tree that had fell during the winter some time.
The end of the tree was covered with snow so we could not pull it around out of the way.
Blind-Pilot used my chainsaw to cut a path between the downed tree.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 87

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 88

99 breaking this part of the trail since the Sami made tracks toward a tree.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 89

Here is an area the Sami was small enough to cross without getting high centered.
99 in the Tweety Jeep wasn’t as lucky.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 90
Tweety Jeep was stuck so bad we could not pull it forward.
First we tried with the Sami and then Blind-Pilots TJ.
We even tried to use the Tweety’s winch but it just about killed the battery.
Time to up grade the battery.

Havo gave 99 a pull back.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 91

At the intersection of Whites Ridge Crest Trail and Whites Ridge Cross-over Trail we had some Green Dot Markers to repair and replace.
Out of the 4 markers only one was ok. One was broken, another missing and the other way in the wrong spot.

The broken marker.

The Upper Whites Ridge climb had snow on it as it did the year before.
When this climb has snow on it, it gives most rigs a good challenge.
When it is dry you can make it up in 2WD.

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 108

We played awhile on the climb.
We headed back down to Whites Ridge Cross-over trail and ran it down to the Mid Fork Road.
Our next destination was Tree Phones Campground.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 109

We wheeled the campground roads. The off camber snow drifts and tree holes make those roads fun.

The Sami did great breaking trail. A lot better than I had thought it would do since it has open difs.

To the right of Blind-Pilot you can see the top of one of the picnic tables at a campsite.

Blind-Pilot pulled me out.

My camera was not fast enough to catch a picture of 99 driving up and over the steep snow drift.
She was already across when the camera snapped the picture.

After some of the members left, we headed up Sedge Ridge.
I left the Sami at camp and drove 99’s Tweety Jeep.
We took A-2400 and turned up A-2420.
We can up on an area where some trees fell into the road and people were driving up the back to go around them.
Blind-Pilot ran the saw again.

Members cleared the trail.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 121

Up on top of the ridge, we turned Southwest on the Sedge Ridge Crest Trail.
We found a broken Green Dot confidence Marker.

Volunteers work to replace it with a new marker.

On up the Sedge Ridge 4×4 Trail above Red Saddle we some snow patches.
I did not get a picture of the snow drift that I broke out the passenger side front marker and bent the radio antenna.
This snow patch was fun.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 129

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 130

We found another tree down.
Someone had cut the end off but not enough to keep people on the trail.
Blind-Pilot and the volunteers fixed that.

Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 133

We got up to the Rocky Climb to see it covered with snow.
I thought I would give it a shot right up the steep part with the Tweety Jeep.
After working it awhile I finely got to a point where I wasn’t digging thought the snow anymore.
The front tires were trying to drive up the snow and the rig felt like it wanted to go over backwards since I had to hit it hard.
Who knows if it really would of but why try?

Blind-Pilot tried to work his way around on the other trail up.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 136
The off camber drift made it too hard to stay on the trail.
I also tried it and didn’t do any better.

Guido and Crawl Dad didn’t want any part if that snow covered hill climb.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 137

We head back down to Red Saddle and then down A-2400 toward the Sno-park.

On A-2400 at A-2420 we replaced a missing Green Dot Marker.

It was close to 8 PM.
Guido was happy this was the last Green Dot Marker to do since he wants to eat dinner.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 142

Back at camp Blind-Pilot left for home and we had dinner and did some BSing around the campfire.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 143

The next morning we all packed up. We turned in the DNR tools, green dots and markers at the guard station.
Everyone other than my family left. We stayed to wheel some more.
99 Drove the Tweety Jeep and I drove the Sami.
We headed back up on Sedge Ridge taking A-2400.
A long the way we found another Green Dot sign down we had missed the night before.
It was an easy fix with my shovel.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 144

On past Red Saddle we found there was a Green Dot marker missing.
As we were looking for the missing marker we saw the old road marker was down.
Monster stacked rocks around it to stand it up.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 145
We could not find the missing marker and had already turned the new ones in so we will have to replace it another time.

We went on and turned up the South Fork Road. It wasn’t to far up we found patches of snow.
99 just about stuck it but made it through.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 146

As we turned up the Sedge Ridge Crest trail the snow got soft.
I came close to getting the Sami stuck a few times but was able to wheel it backwards to get out for another run.

Well this time I pressed my luck and that was it.
Time for 99 to pull me out with the Tweety Jeep.
Photos: EWOR Ahtanum State Forest Work Party & Mother’s Day 4x4 Run 147

We got turned around at started heading down.
99 got off into the soft stuff and came close to getting stuck but again made it through.

We ran the South Fork road down and then went up Boulder Trail.
We stopped at a cool view point where you can see the upper and lower Yakima Valleys.

At the top of Boulder Trail we found another down marker.

I could only dig down a little so I had to put rocks around the marker.
One rock had big black flying ants under it and I made them mad when I picked the rock up.
The marker is good enough for now. lol

Up on Sedge Ridge Crest Trail we found a tree across the trail and a new by-pass.

We fixed it since I still had my chainsaw in the Tweety Jeep.

We went down A-2420 and then down A-2400 back to our camp at the Sno-park.
We loaded the Sami on the trailer and aired up the Tweety tires.
We headed home from our great weekend

This was a great run thanks to everyone that came.

Thank you to all the people that helped do the trail maintenance.
We logged 117.5 volunteer hours with the DNR.

2009 Beverly Dunes Clean-up
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On the weekend of May 1st – May 3rd, 2009 we had a camp-out at Beverly Dunes for our annual clean-up.

The ORV area had less trash to pick up this year. Beverly Dunes is now cleaner thanks to the 35 volunteers that helped.

They put in a total of 170 volunteer hours.

Here are some pictures of our weekend.

The DNR made a new entrance into the Beverly Dunes ORV area and are working on building a new parking lot.

Friday afternoon we started setting up camp. We first did a clean-up in camp.

Bubz worked hard picking up all these nails from an old burn pit.

After camp was set up we hit the dunes.

Kevin broke his quad and needed a tow back to camp.

After I got Kevin’s quad back to camp we headed back out.

Saturday morning Mike Williams from the DNR came and so did the rest of the volunteers.
We started the clean-up at 10 AM. Most of the rigs started at the east end and worked their way back to camp.
The quad riders hit the tight trails along the creek.

ToyZuki and my family worked our way west just above the tight trails.

A few guys were still out fixing the fence.

The rest of us went back to camp to unload the trash.
