2012 “Top Member 4×4 Challenge”

Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road

Report by Clay Graham / CegPics.com

Every year we hold a fun snow run event for the dedicated members call the “Top Member Challenge”. We find a good area to line up the 4×4 rigs and let them race to the finish line that is on top of a ridge somewhere. Deeper the snow the better challenge. This year the Top Member Challenge was held at the Ahtanum State Forest up Doe Pocket.

This year’s Top Member 4×4 Challenge give-a-ways were:
The “Top Member” winner gets a Trophy from Eastern Washington Off Road and a EWA t-shirt from Eastern Washington Off Road.
The worse stuck gets a Recovery Strap from Ron the Parts Guy.
1st person stuck gets a 4WheelingPlus.com t-shirt from Ron the Parts Guy.
All drivers participating in the 2011 EWA TM 4×4 Challenge get double the EWA discount from Ron the Parts Guy on any parts they break during the event.

This year’s Top Member competitors were:
Blindpilot……..TJ (33″ Tires, F&R locked, Winch)
Foxracer……..TJ (35″ tires, F&R locked, Winch)
Jeepscum……TJ (33″ Tires, R locked, Winch)
TJ40………….TJ (34″ tires, F&R locked, Winch)
Havo………….Toyota pickup (35″ Tires, F&R locked, Winch)
Craigen……….XJ (35″ tires, R locked)
Guido was the judge and I “Ceg” was the director. CSR came to watch.

About the day of the event:

Around 10 AM Saturday January 21st, 2012 members met up at the Tampico Church for the Top Member 4×4 Challenge. I rode with Foxracer in his Rubicon. Once everyone was at Tampico Church, we headed to Nasty Creek Corrals and aired down. We headed up Doe Pocket with Jeepscum leading the way. The roads were icy under the snow making it tough to make the hill climbs. At the Dual Climb everyone had to winch up. Two of the rigs decide to turn around to find other places to snow wheel. Once on top of the ridge it was a lot of fun.

The Top Member challenge started just past the cattle gate. We lined up the rigs and Guido gave the signal to start the challenge. It was a great race all the way to Jackass Road. Everyone was in first place and last place at one time or another. Foxracer got stuck twice and Jeepscum pulled him out. BlindPilot had to winch a few times to push through the deep snow. BlindPilot won the Top Member Challenge for 2012.

At Jackass Road we turned around and back tracked to Nasty Creek Corrals to air up. The views of the city lights were cool as we came down. A few of us met up in Yakima at The Rec Room for dinner and to talk about the fun we had this day.

Below are the pictures of our day:

Snowmobile fun at Eastern Washington Adventures

Snowmobile fun at Eastern Washington Adventures
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Tiny came over to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House today Jan 20th, 2012 to pick up some XJ parts. While Tiny was here I had him take a look at our snowmobile to see if he could get it started since it has been parked for about a year. Tiny blew in the gas tank and got the snowmobile to start. After it warmed up he took it for a ride around the place.

I took a ride on it next while Tiny unloaded his snowmobile. For me it was the first time ever riding one. Wow it blows my quad away. Next I took a ride on Tiny’s snowmobile. That was a rush for sure! My bad back in now killing me.

Next Tiny took the kids out on our snowmobile to teach them how to ride. Once he thought they had it down, he followed the kids on his snowmobile. By the time Tiny left all four kids could ride the snowmobile. All but Odo got to ride by them selves. Odo has a problem pushing the throttle. We have to get it to work a little easier.

Here are some pictures of the day:

Cowiche: The Search for Deep Snow

Cowiche: The Search for Deep Snow
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Around 10 AM Saturday January 7th, 2012 Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at the Cowiche Mill Road entrance of the Ahtanum State Forest for a 4×4 run to find deep snow. I rode with TJ40 in his TJ. On this run the roads were iced over and there was not much snow until we got way up high.

First we ran Cowiche Mill Road and turned up the first Green Dot Road to the right. A truck had slid off the road the day before and the guys were waiting for their friend to come up and pull the truck out with a Jeep. TJ40 said he would winch the truck back on the road since we had more rigs to help if need be. TJ40’s Mile Marker winch rated for 8,000 Lbs did a great job pulling the truck up. Once the truck was back on the road, we move on up the ridge toward Hatton Road.

Up on Hatton Road we drove toward Jumpoff Lookout. It started off with driving on thick ice with a little bit of snow. The snow drifts got deeper in some areas as we came onto C3000. Up near the Forest Service boundary the snow got deep enough the rigs were having a little trouble pushing through. We had to cut three trees out of the road to keep going. As we came around to the North Slope it was blocked by a big deep drift. We finally got enough deep snow to play in but no place to go. This is were we turned around and it became a stuck fest. Once we all turned around we headed back down.

Back on Cowiche Mill Road at C1000 some of the group headed home. The rest of us headed up C1000 and on up onto Cowiche Ridge. We ran Cowiche Ridge and then up onto the Strobach Mountain 4×4 Trail. Near the Hogback we found the Yakima Ridgerunners having a good time. We stopped and talked with them for awhile before heading back out for home.

This was a very fun day thanks for all who came and some that we met on the trail.

Wenas Wildlife Area End of Year 4×4 Trip
Report by Clay Graham / CegPics.com

Around 10 AM Saturday December 31st, 2011 Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at the Sheep Company Road entrance of the Wenas Wildlife Area for the End of year run. I rode with BlindPilot in his TJ. This was more of a backroads sightseeing run this year since there was not much snow.

First we explored Rosa Creek Road to the end. Next we ran the Umtanum Ridge Road to the Southeast to check out the views over looking the Yakima River. Next we ran Umtanum Ridge road to the west. We dropped down into Black Canyon and then back up to Umtanum Ridge road again. We continued following Umtanum Ridge to the Northwest and dropped down to near the end of the pavement on North Wenas Road. We ran the pavement down by Wenas Lake to ran a green dot road back up to Umtanum Ridge. The first road we tried was Kelly Hollow but it was closed. Next we drove of Hessler Flats Road to find it was closed at the end. We turned around and drive back out. Tealtard headed for home and we decided to run the Wenas Pass for something to do. On the Ellensburg side we turned up Durr Road and ran it out to Sheep Company Road. We aired up and headed out. TJ40 when home and the rest of us went to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House for the New Year’s Party.

Lake Wenatchee State Park

Lake Wenatchee State Park
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Tuesday December 20th, 2011 we left Leavenworth Washington after being there for the 2011 Leavenworth Christmas Lighting Festival get together. We headed North on Chumstick Highway to check out Plain Washington a long the way to see Lake Wenatchee. At Lake Wenatchee State Park we went in to take a look since we have a Discover Pass. The boys and I took a walk down to the lake while the girls stayed in the truck since it was very windy and cold.
