On the morning of Monday August 22nd, 2011 we left Wanapum State Park campground from our Eastern Washington Adventures Exploring Vantage Road Trip and headed down the Columbia River exploring.

Next we headed down to the Lower Yakima Valley to see some sites. Our first of three places to see was the town of Granger, Washington. Granger has a road that loops through town with dinosaurs everywhere.

Exploring Columbia River Road Trip:
I-90 to the Vernita Bridge

On the morning of Monday August 22nd, 2011 we left Wanapum State Park campground from our Eastern Washington Adventures Exploring Vantage Road Trip. I this day we set out to see some sites a long the Columbia River. Our first place to check out was the boat launch next to the Wanapum State Park campground. The boat launch had plenty of paved parking and looked like a good place to launch from.

Next we headed over the I-90 bridge to get on the other side of the Columbia River. We turned off the Freeway and followed the Columbia River south. Not far we stopped at Sand Hollow South. This is a free place to access to the water of the Columbia River. I believe it is owned by Grant County PUD. After a quick view we headed on down river toward the Wanapum Dam.

Wanapum Dam was very cool. They have a Heritage Center Museum you can go into free. Inside you can learn a lot of history about the area and the people who live there years ago. The kids really got a lot out of our visit to Wanapum Dam. We are hoping to set up an Eastern Washington Adventures “Group guided tour” to see the how the dam works. Details will be posted on our web site under Up-coming Events/Event Planning.

We headed down river passing the Beverly Dunes ORV Area turn off. We did not stop at because I had an ORV run planned for Beverly Dunes ORV Area the next day.

On down the river we drove around checking out Mattawa, Desert Aire and Priest Rapids Dam. Priest Rapids Dam is close to the public so we did not see much.

Our last stop at the Columbia River was at the Vernita Safety Rest Area next to the Vernita Bridge. We had lunch at the rest area before heading to Explore the Lower Yakima Valley.

Exploring Vantage Road Trip:
Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park/Wanapum Recreational Area

On the morning of Sunday August 21st, 2011 we left Selah, Washington and Northeast for the Eastern Washington Adventures Exploring Vantage Road Trip. We took the back roads all the way to Vantage so we could take in the sites. As we pass through the Yakima Canyon we saw a lot of people floating the river on this hot day. One raft full of women flashed us and my boys thought that was cool.

We took the Vantage Highway and saw a lot wind machines. Close to Vantage we stopped to see the petrified logs. We walked the first part of the trail and got to see a few petrified logs in cages. It was too hot to walk all the trails and we also did not like the idea of walking in Rattlesnake county. We head on down the road toward Vantage to the main park. There were a lot of things to see and you were able to touch the petrified wood. We had lunch and then checked out all the cool stuff.

Next we headed across the Columbia River to kill some time since we could not check into our campsite we reserved at Wanapum State Park until after 2:30 PM. We drove up to the Wild Horses Monument Viewpoint off of I-90 to take in the view. The kids wanted to walk up to see the Wild Horses Monument but again it was just to hot of a day for the hike. We told them we will go back went it cools down and the snakes are hibernating.

Next we head over to the George area just to look around in the nice air conditioned pickup. Just for fun we drove by the Gorge Amphitheater AKA “The Gorge in George“. It was getting to be time where we could check in at Wanapum State Park so we headed back across the Columbia River.

We got check in at Wanapum State Park and set up camp. My wife and kids walked over to the day use area of Wanapum State Park and found it was packed so bad they could not get into the water. They came back to camp to wait for the crowd to dissipate some.

A little later on I took a walk over to see the day use area. I could not believe all the trash that people left everywhere. I saw one guy in a group that was leaving chuck a beer bottle into the brush. I as a Public Land Volunteer am tired of people that abuse areas.

When I returned to camp, my wife and kids went to the day use area to swim. Foxracer came to see me at our camp. We talk awhile until it got dark. My wife and kids showed up as Foxracer was leaving.

That night sleeping in the tent was kind of wild. The wind was blowing like crazy. It felt good since it was hot but our tents were close to flying away.

The next morning after breakfast we headed out to see more sites.

Kittitas Car Show and Burnouts
By Clay Graham / CegPics.com

On Saturday August 13th, 2011 Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at 4WheelingPlus.com in Kittitas to see the town’s annual event, “Kruisin’ Kittitas Car Show and Burnouts”.

The day started off with a car show at Wilson Park. We walked down the street to look at the cars in the show on this very warm morning. There were vendors lined up along both sides of the street near the cars on display. They had a DJ playing oldies. Some of the cars in the show were on the street but most were in Wilson Park. We started in the park looking at cars and worked our way back out onto the street to the vendor area. There were a lot of nice rides. We headed back to 4WheelingPlus.com to have lunch and to relax awhile in the shade.

Around 2:30 PM the parade of cars came and turned around in front of 4WheelingPlus.com to head back toward Wilson Park. Not long after the parade was off the street, the burnout began. We walked down to see the action. Most of our group stayed at the far end. I made my way around to try to get some shots of the burnouts. The crowd was to thick for me to get very close. The smoke coming from the tires burning on the pavement also made it hard to get a shot of the cars that were burning out. By this time in the day it was really hot. Standing there at the starting line in the heat and smoke I looked over and saw Crurly’s II. I went in for a cold beer. It was much cooler inside. I drank a beer while looking out the window toward the burnouts. I did not want to miss to much so I headed back out. I was able to get a few good shot of a Chevy Pickup burning out as I made my way back down the street on the up wind side. Down at the other end I see my group out on the street all sweating in the sun. They looked to be having a good time but I felt a little guilty for inviting them a long on my walk.

Once the burnout were over, we headed back to 4WheelingPlus.com to get our vehicle. We said our goodbyes and headed out. We took the Yakima Canyon on the way to our home in Selah. There were many people floating the Yakima River. We got home to find there was a grass fire at the Wenas Wildlife Area few miles for our home. After dinner I took the boys over the ridge to see the helicopters. It looked like the fire was out as we watch a helicopter fly away.

This was a very fun day for my family. Thank you 4WheelingPlus.com for inviting us to hang out at your shop between the events.

2011 Eastern Washington Adventures Summer Meet & Greet – Aug 5 2011

2011 Eastern Washington Adventures Summer Meet & Greet
By Clay GrahamThis year the Summer Meet & Greet event started Friday August 5th, 2011 and ran through Sunday August 7th, 2011.
What started off as an off road event has became much more, as has the Eastern Washington Adventures site.
For some this was the first time seeing a RTI Ramp in use and for others they have been on this RTI Ramp many times. On Friday night we buried a pig in the ground to cook for Saturdays Potluck. A lot of people camped out.Saturday afternoon we pulled the pig out of the ground and got it ready to eat. Around 4 PM a lot more people showed up.

We ate dinner, the kids sold raffle tickets to support the Forest Watch Volunteer Program and some played on the RTI Ramp.

Around 7 PM we drew raffle tickets to see who won the donated items. 4WheelingPlus.com donated a tree saver, a recovery strap and an Off-road Jack. Eastern Washington Adventures donated a lot of t-shirts.After the Official Meet & Greet we had a party for Lisa Graham AKA 99 (the Co-Owner of Eastern Washington Adventures) with a bonfire and dancing to help her celebrate turning 40 years old.

Sunday everyone packed up camp and headed home.

We want to thank everyone who came, the people who helped make the potluck happen, the people who helped cook the pig, the people that brought gifts, the raffle sponsors and the people that donated toward the Forest Watch Volunteer Program.

This was a great time because of you. Here are some pictures of the event:
