Yakima River Canyon Camp Out

On Saturday March 18th, 2017, we headed up the Yakima River Canyon to meet up with others at the Umtanum Recreation Area to camp and do some hiking.
My boys started off by building a fire and starting dinner. TJ40 and Avalanche pulled in shortly after.
We decide to take shifts watching dinner. With the two-way radios, we our cooks and hikers could keep in touch.
The first hike we headed across the cable bridge over the Yakima River and then under the train tracks to get to the Umtanum Creek Trail. The beginning of the trail was under water from the Umtanum Creek over flowing. The creak was dumping mud into the Yakima River.
We headed back over the cable bridge and went up to a view point to see what was there. There was a sign to read which is posted in a photo in this report.
Next we followed a trail sign that took you into what looking like an old road with campsite on the river. We walked down the river to below the trailer parking lot and back to camp.
TJ40, Bubz and I stayed at camp, and Doc, Odo and Avalanche hiked to the top of the ridge and back down a steep trail to the bottom. We talked to them on the radio making sure they were ok.
After everyone was back at camp, we had the dinner the boys cooked over the fire. It was pretty good.
We stood around the campfire into the night until we were real cold from the wind. We sat in TJ40’s camper with the heater on for awhile, and my three sons watched a movie in the camper van. Then it was off to bed.
The next morning, Bubz made breakfast and TJ40 played with his drone.
We had a very fun time at the Umtanum Recreation Area.
Checkout time was 11 AM, so we headed out south through the Yakima River Canyon making another stop at the Selah Cliffs Trail for a hike.
