On Sunday November 9th 2014, we left are camp at Beverly Dunes (where we just did a clean up) with two Jeeps and headed down the Columbia River to Saddle Mountains to play in the big sand dunes.
While there they thought they would take the trails up to the top of the ridge. The trails through the canyon had a lot of big rocks and was a lot of fun.
The two Jeeps took the mostly traveled route up to get on top of the ridge and found a very off camber section at the top of a steep loose hill climb. That is when the fun came to an end. There were no trees to stop the Jeeps from rolling over and over down the mountain. The two Jeeps had to turn around on the off camber section to go back down. Backing down the steep loose section could have lead to death.
The two Jeeps one at a time got turned around by backing up hill with multiple point turns and then headed back down. The lesson that was learned was, “The best looking travel road doesn’t always mean it is the right one to take”.
Over all this weekend event was a fun, thanks to all who came.
