News: Selah Downtown Association February Board Meeting Highlights

Selah Downtown Association February Board Meeting Highlights
Report by Clay Graham / CegPics.com / Selah Adventures, Selah Community & Tourism.

Selah Downtown Association (SDA) held their monthly Board Meeting today at Selah City Hall.

A big topic was getting a military vehicle to place in Selah at one of the parks.  The SDA has been working on this project for awhile. The old Commander of the Yakima Training Center was there at the start of this project and made it sound easy for the City of Selah to get two vehicles delivered and set up for decommission. The new Commander of the Yakima Training Center, Lieutenant Colonel Jason Evers has continued to help make this happen. Lieutenant Colonel Jason Evers has found out that one of the vehicles has been used else where. Also moving and decommissioning military vehicles would have to be paid for by whom ever was taking them, not the military. With all the new information the SDA has decided to find out the additional cost before moving forward.

The SDA Design Committee has some new members and is working on the SDA Logo and Branding. The committee talked about helping the city come up with a new look. Selah Mayor John Gawlik pointed out the City of Selah leaders already had voted for the official colors and logo. They were there on the city’s flag. Blue and gold colors, the Red Apple with Selah in white in it.

Andrew Potter with the City of Selah presented the SDA Board with a project for Selah that needs matched funding to receive a grant. This is the Volunteer Park, All Inclusive Park project. Selah Parks Foundation is doing a “Brick Fundraiser” and is asking for the SDA to donate for a brick. The SDA Board approved donating for a $500 Brick.

Barb Petrea, a SDA Committee member of multiple SDA Committees is working on a “Selah Discovery Contest”. This is an Easter Egg Hunt in Selah Businesses that will go through the month of March and end April 4th. The contest is open to children in preschool through 11 years of age. Children must be accompanied by an adult to participate. The SDA will hide 32 numbered, cardboard Easter eggs throughout the downtown and surrounding business areas. There will be a secret password on Facebook: www.facebook.com/SelahDowntownAssociation. The children must place the name of the business displaying the numbered egg on the corresponding line on the form and return the completed form to the businesses on the contest form or bring to the Selah Easter Egg Hunt on April 4th at Wixson Park starting at 11am. Winners will be selected from a random drawing of completed and correct entry forms. This was brought to the SDA Board and approved with some funding for printing.

Over all this was a good positive meeting. Here are a few photos:

Photos: Selah Cub Scout Webelos Winter Camping with Selah Boy Scouts

Selah Cub Scout Webelos Winter Camping with Selah Boy Scouts
Report & photos by Clay Graham / CegPics.com / Selah Adventures, Selah Community & Tourism.

Selah Boy Scout Troop 275 invited Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 Webelos 1 and 2 Dens to the troop winter camping trip to see what Boy Scouts is like. Six Webelos Year 2s and one Webelos Year 1 signed up to go. This would the first time for these Cub Scouts to go on a Boy Scout Camp-out.

Around 5 PM Friday January 30th 2015, the Scouts met up at Selah United Methodist Church to pack for the trip. Once everything was packed and everyone was ready, we convoyed up to Camp Fife in Goose Prairie, Washington which it near Bumping Lake. Bumping River Road was icy but not to bad for traveling.

At Camp Fife we set up for the weekend in Dee Hunter All Seasons Lodge. This lodge had two sections giving us two times of everything. Each with wood stoves for heat, kitchens, restrooms with showers, and a lot of bunk beds.  There was no power so the lodge had propane lighting which wasn’t to bright.

By the time it was lights out, the lodge was very warm down stairs and hot upstairs were the bunks were. It was kind of a late night getting to sleep since some of the Scouts were a little wound up.

Saturday morning the Boy Scouts cooked us great breakfast. After the dishes were done, we headed out for a tour of Camp Fife by Scout Master Willey. The Scout Master took us around the whole camp showing us things that are used for the week long Boy Scout Summer Camp that is held in July. After the tour the Boy Scouts made lunch.

The rest of the afternoon the Scouts played in the snow. A lot of the Scout went sledding. Scout Master Willey taught two of the Cub Scouts how to cross country ski. Everyone seem to have a lot of fun.

The Scouts cooked dinner just after dark. Most of the Scouts and adults played indoor games until lights out. On this night we all seem to get to sleep pretty fast. It was a long fun day of playing that wore most of us out.

Sunday morning the Scouts cooked breakfast. Then it was time to clean up the whole lodge and pack for home. Most wanted to be back home early to get ready to watch the Super Bowl. It was starting to snow so leaving early wasn’t a bad idea anyway.

Once the lodge was cleaned and everything packed in the vehicles, we headed back to Selah. The road out was covered with snow and it was very hard to see the ruts in the ice below. Those ruts caused our Jeep to slide a few times on the way to SR410. SR410 had only snow on it a little ways.

This was a great time for my two sons and I. I am sure most would say the same.

Thank you Selah Boy Scout Troop 275!!!

News: Selah Looking for Help for All Inclusive Park, First in Central Washington

Selah Looking for Help for All Inclusive Park, First in Central Washington
Report by Clay Graham / CegPics.com / Selah Adventures, Selah Community & Tourism.

Volunteer Park is a proposed all inclusive park which will provide playground facilities to all people regardless of their physical or mental limitations. The playground equipment is made specifically for children in mind who have physical or mental limitations. This would be the first park of it’s type in central Washington.

The City of Selah has been awarded a grant of $359,000 which requires matching funds. The grant parameters have limited the city to contributing $150,000. This leaves another $241,000 that has to be raised.

To help raise funds, the Selah Parks Foundation is doing a “Brick Fundraiser”. With your donation, you will be able to personalize a brick. Brick sizes vary. 8” x 4” standard brick for $100, 8″ x 8″ larger brick for $250.  8″ x 8″ larger brick with company logo engraved for $500. See link for more info http://volunteerpark.donationbricks.com/.

If you have questions about this project you can email [email protected] or call Charlie Brown Selah Parks and Recreation Manager at 509-698-7301.
