On Saturday October 29th, 2016 around 10 AM outdoor enthusiasts met up at Graham Family Farm in Selah, Washington for the “Oktoberfest Backroads 4×4 Adventure”. We convoyed to the Upper Wenas part of the Wenas Wildlife Area for a backroads run up Cleman Mountain. It was a rainy day.

We aired down at the parking area off Maloy Road and headed up Auduban Road then went up Hog Ranch Road. As we got higher, we found some snow. We continued into the Naches Ranger District onto turn up FS1716 and then onto FS1701 (Bald Mountain Rd.). We onto FS1712 at headed across Cleman Mountain stopping for lunch along the way. After lunch we ran to the east end of the Green Dot Road on Cleman Mountain. We were hoping for a view of the Upper Valley but the clouds were to thick. We back tracked to head off the mountain. Due to the thick fog, we turned down the wrong Green Dot Road and had to go back up and hit the right one on down the ridge (W1100). We aired up at the Hay barn off North Wenas Road and headed back to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House. This backroads run was fun. The views were not very good due to the clouds.

Back at Graham Family Farm we had a Oktoberfest potluck.

This was a fun event thanks to all who came.

On Monday October 31st, 2016 the Selah Chamber of Commerce held the 9th annual “Business Trick or Treat”. Many of the businesses participated. Business Trick or Treat was from 4 PM to 6 PM.

For the “Business Trick or Treat” I took photos from in front of Selah Mini Mart & Smoke Shop which I would like to thank you to Selah Mini Mart & Smoke Shop for having Selah Sweets out front of their store and for providing Halloween Candy when we ran out. Also a thank you to Bruce Sears State Farm for letting us park the van in their lot and to the Selah Chamber of Commerce for putting the Business Trick or Treat on for so many years.

On the evening of Saturday October 22nd, 2016, Northwest Harvest held their annual “Carve Out Hunger” event at the Selah Civic Center.

Selah Sweets is happy to be part of this very fun event that is for a great cause.

About the event from Northwest Harvest:

SIPS. CARVES. BITES. This signature Yakima event is a fun, laid back, “come in your jeans” evening to help fight hunger, and will take place at the Selah Civic Center! The 21 and over only event will feature beer and hard cider from local breweries, wine and non-alcoholic spirits too, plus outstanding food sampling from local caterers! Enjoy some music, a relaxed harvest atmosphere and many carves watching the local media compete against each other in a timed pumpkin carving contest! Every guest will receive a commemorative mug with one ticket to vote for, and possibly win, their favorite pumpkin carving contest creation!

Every ticket purchase helps Northwest Harvest provide 200 nutritious meals!

On October 8th 2016, the Wenas Mammoth Foundation hosted a “Day at the Dig” Open House from 9AM to 3PM.

This event was free to attend for all ages. They had many thing to do for the children. Some examples of what the kids got to do was digging for fossils, coloring, and panning. People learned about what the Wenas Mammoth Foundation was about, and the dig site. The Wenas Mammoth Foundation is not a state or federal program. It is based on donation. You donations help keep this program alive.

There was a dedication for naming the mountain Wenas Mammoth Mountain, and planting of a Ginkgo Tree, (a designated “living fossil”).

People we able to learn about Zoo-archeology (Bones and Skulls), and Geology from Central Washington University. The learned about Cowiche Canyon Conservatory, Kittitas Environmental Educational Network, Yakima Area Arboretum, and Yakima Valley Audubon society.

The Schedule for activities and presentations was as following:

9:00 am: Opening
9:00 am – 3:00 pm: Hands-on activities for adults and kids
9:30 -10:00 am: Naming the mountain dedication and planting a tree.
10:00 – 11:00 am: The mysteries of Wenas Mammoth Mountain
11:00 – Noon: Nick Zentner’s presentation on the Ice Age Floods
1:00 – 2:00 pm: Past, Present and Future of the Wenas Mammoth Foundation
3:00 pm: Closing
