Rimrock Trail 4W608 Work Day
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On August 29th, 2009 we met up in Tieton at Waycrazy’s house.
We hooked up the Forest Service trailer and headed to Rimrock’s Trail 4W608.

At the 4W608 trail head near FS1200 the Forest Service had brought in some rock last year for volunteers to use for the mud holes on the trail.

  • The idea is to put bottoms on the deep mud holes on 4W608.
Since the holes are getting too deep to drive through the trail has been getting wider and by-passes are being made.
It is sad this trail may be closed because of all the damage users are continuing to do. We volunteered a day a year ago to help keep this trail open. We added many loads of rock to the first sets of holes.
On Saturday we volunteered to help another day on 4W608.
The rock we added the year before was buried from people making the mud holes wider just to throw mud.
The rock seemed to work where the holes did not get any deeper.

Guido loaded the first load of rock.

Using Fish’s modified F250 to pull the Forest Service trailer, we were off to add more rock to the first mud hole.

We added another load to the first hole.

After getting loaded again we drove up the trail to the bad area of the trail.

Here we stopped to see where we where going to turn this big truck around to dump.
Photos: Rimrock Trail 4W608 Work Day 51

Wow. We were real shocked to see what was mud hole after mud hole turned into one big mud bog.
This is 10 times as bad as it was a year ago.

Back at the trail head Waycrazy had to move the rock back into the pile.
Photos: Rimrock Trail 4W608 Work Day 99

This was Wrangler’s first trip to the trails.
She puked as soon as we hit the trail because of the bumps and then again later.
She had a good time running around with the kids.
Photos: Rimrock Trail 4W608 Work Day 100

On this day we logged 80 volunteer work hours with the Forest Service.
Bill Kabrich volunteered 3 hours of his time transporting the tractor that Burrows Tractor let us use.
Thank you to Burrows Tractor and thank you to all that volunteered that helped out to keep 4W608 open.

Note:
Please do not spin your tires in the mud on the trails for fun.
Spinning tires for fun is one of the ways the mud holes start and hold water.
After the holes are started then others spin their tires trying
to get out of the mud holes and the mud holes grow into mud bogs.
Others make illegal by-passes to go around the mud holes.
Then the trail gets closed since it cost money to rebuild the trail.
Volunteers that work on these trails help to keep them open,
but on this trail the damage is growing faster than what is being fixed.
Tread Lightly!

Truck Drives Off Mountain from String Trail (4W309)
By Clay Graham / CegPics.com

Manastash Ridge, Washington
On August 8th, 2009 a guy decides to drive his truck off the 4W309 trail on the ridge to get to the lower part of 4W309 which he could see from the top. This is what we were told by the people in the other rig with them we met earlier on 4W330. They were on their way to look for Search & Rescue and had a flat and had to borrow a jack.

Some quad riders in the area where there helping by the time we got there. The quad riders said the driver was in pain but could walk around. The passenger was conscious but could not move. We stayed to help until the Search & Rescue got there. We had to guide the helicopter in by phone. The Search & Rescue and Forest Rangers on the ground showed up as the helicopter was landing.

We do not know how this story ended. We just hope for the best.

Eastern Washington Off Road
Shoestring 4×4 Trip

Hosted by Graham Family Farm

Report & photos by Clay Graham

On Saturday August 8th, 2009 we met at the Eastern Washington Off Road camp on FS590 off of Milk Creek Road.

I rode shotgun with Scuba.

We headed up FS590 toward 4W617 (Lilly Pond Trail).
We found a land slide on FS590.

Here is a little dirty bridge next to a mud hole.
PHOTOS > Eastern Washington Off Road: 2009 Shoestring 4x4 Trip 104

The next bridge was hard to get up onto since you have to get mud on your tires to get to it.

We tried to weld it back together with jumper cables and batteries.

PHOTOS > Eastern Washington Off Road: 2009 Shoestring 4x4 Trip 147

At the bottom of that hill climb Waycrazy’s steering broke in another place.
As he was working on it, this guy in a 4runner comes down the trail running a flat tire.
He did not have a jack to change it out so Waycrazy loaned him his.
The guy in the 4runner told us he was in a hurry to go find the Search & Rescue
because his friend rolled his rig trying to take a short cut off the mountain.
PHOTOS > Eastern Washington Off Road: 2009 Shoestring 4x4 Trip 148

Waycrazy got his rig fixed enough to drive back out going up and over to the 5 fingers.
Guido followed Waycrazy back to camp.

We headed on with Scuba as the lead vehicle.

The mean hill climb was nothing.

As soon as we turned something in Test Dummy’s Dana 30 broke.
Test Dummy ran it hoping for the best.

It wasn’t another 50 feet later, Scuba’s Dana 30 was popping bad.
We found the axle u-joint broke and took out the axles.
Here is a picture of it down the trail after running it a ways.

We turned off 4W676 (Kaner Flats Trail) and ran 4W617 (Lilly Pond Trail) back to camp.

On the way BlindPilot pointed out that the only two Jeeps not to break on this run were TJs. He’ll have his day. LOL.

This was a very fun run thanks to all who came and to some cool people we seen on the trail.
